Local school builds their own timber classroom

February 15, 2017

Colwyn Bay Townscape Heritage Initiative has been working with The Natural Building Centre and Communities First on a Timber Frame Building project, where school pupils have the chance to build their own classroom!

The Natural Building Centre built the classroom pieces from scratch, along with other wooden tools; these teach the pupils about traditional timber-frame construction and allows them to get hands on and see the results of their practical work.

There are different types of wood to demonstrate which type of timber can be used for different building projects, and building the classroom tests their skills as well, such as measuring and working out fractions, angles and weights.

Ysgol Maes Owen were the first school to have a go at building the classroom, and they had a great time, with sunny weather allowing them to enjoy working outside.

The kids learnt about the timber, how old the trees were, about hard and soft woods, and what timber to use when building a house. They also found matching roman numerals and putting angles together interesting, and enjoyed using a mallet, working out what went where and working together.
